Gingerpig It starts with a Hammond-organ. Such an ultimate rock instrument should be accompanied by a band, right? Thats also what Gorefest-guitarist Boudewijn Bonebakker thought when he started the band Gingerpig at the end of 2008. Not only to justify the purchase of a Hammond, but also to create rockmusic in peace and freedom. My philosophy is that Im able now to make real music without too many restrictions. Not as a product, produced with protocols, to please a specific target group. I want to make music in an honest, organic and human way and as a real band. Actually in the old way that once was conventional.

In a short amount of time Bonebakker wrote loads of songs which are clearly based on the vibe of the bluesrock- and hardrockmasters of old times. But there is more. Much more. Trips to 70's funk, soul, jazzrock and even early symphonic rock are definitely more a rule than an exception.

In the process of forming a new band, Bonebakker meets up with drummer Ries Doms. He is soon followed by bassplayer Sytse Roelevink. To man the Hammond-organ Bonebakker already knows pianist Jarno van Es who he had seen freaking a while before in a smoke-filled jazzcave. I searched for a sound and I needed a particular type of musician for all the instruments. For the drummer I had an old style Zappa in mind, a real ruffler. The Who for the bass and someone like Jon Lord or Keith Emerson on the keyboard, but that was already soon all expanded by a lot of soul.

During intense sessions in the rehearsal room the songs become further dressed. After playing a couple of shows Doms decides to leave the band to be able to focus more on his other projects. Friend and jazzrock-drummer Maarten Poiters sits in for a few shows and it becomes quickly clear: his play produces so many new possibilities that he immediately becomes a member of the band.

Gingerpig dives into the legendary The Void Studio in Eindhoven to record eight songs with Pieter Kloos. No protocols, no sterile production. Every note played is live recorded. Think of the approach of Allman Brothers or the old Stones. The real early seventies way. Thats the reason why we worked together with Pieter Kloos. Our ideas match virtually 100%. Pieter is also from the analogue path; he has the sincere recording of music set high on his priorities. The whole record is recorded live accept the vocals. Not the easiest way I can tell you, but the result is honest.

And you can hear it. The Ways of the Gingerpig reveals a band that is a whole and knows no restrictions. The songs vary from long spun carpets of sound to compact pop songs. Sometimes even with the typical Bonebakker-riffs which are also to be heard on the albums of Gorefest. The Ways of the Gingerpig takes you on a trip like the old records of the seventies. Humane, warm, and full of experimental passion. Im not afraid the music will be put in a box. Then I just quit and find myself a new band. But that is not until I have reached the borders and that will take a while with this band.

The Ways of the Gingerpig will be released by Suburban on April 29th for the Benelux and May 9th for the rest of Europe. As part of Roadburn Festival Introduces the band will perform a special showcase in Cul de Sac on April 16th.
