Matt is the husband of Kate Barlow, the brother of Jim Barlow, and the brother-in-law of Iced Earth founder Jon Schaffer.

He quit Iced Earth in 2003, citing (in former bandmate Jon Schaffer's words) that he'd "be happier doing some good in the real world rather than living the illusion of something as shallow as a 'rock star'". Part of Barlow's official statement to those who'd potentially find his decision difficult to understand at the time: "I feel pity that they must live through others and I hope that someday they will find themselves in a better place". 4 years later he rejoined the band for another temporary run.
