The cool clarity of this CD recording is appropriate for Satie's music, especially the Gymnopedies and Gnossiennes, which here seem to exist in a world of their own, quiet, timeless, separate. When reviewing the LP I suggested that in the cabaret song transcriptions, Je te veux and Le Piccadilly, Roge needed to relax more and aim for a drier tone: the latter is to some degree produced here, although the recording still sounds too close. Again, I complained about the undue richness of tone in Vieux sequins, and this has been to some extent refined. Many of Roge's interpretations are entirely admirable, such as those of Embryons desseches and the Sonatine, and certainly they are preferable on CD. Further, this disc plays for over an hour. M.H.
