Read My Lips was released on August 27, 2001 by Polydor. The title was presumed to be based on a quote by U.S. president George H. W. Bush from his 1992 campaign in which he said he wouldn't raise taxes; it was in fact based on a line from the song "The Universe Is You".

It sold 816,358 copies in the United Kingdom and a little over 2 million copies worldwide, it became a success in Europe selling over a million copies being certified Platinum, it was also successful in Australia and Latin America.

The first single from this album was "Take Me Home", and "Lover" was scheduled to be the second single but was replaced by Murder on the Dancefloor. The album was first released in 2001, but after the success of the "Murder on the Dancefloor", Polydor (in the United Kingdom) and Universal (International) decided to re-release the album with extra tracks to push the sales up, the re-issue was released in 2002.

"Take Me Home" and "Murder on the Dancefloor" were released as singles in 2001 and both became substantial UK Top three hits, the latter staying on the charts for several months. These singles were followed in 2002 by "Music Gets the Best of Me" and "Get Over You"/"Move This Mountain", two further hit singles.

Murder on the Dancefloor" is a song written by Gregg Alexander and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Alexander and Matt Rowe for Ellis-Bextor's first album Read My Lips (2001).

After the release of "Take Me Home" in August 2001, Ellis-Bextor released her best-selling single to date in December 2001, "Murder on the Dance floor". The song peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart, stayed on the charts for twenty-three weeks, and became the most played song of 2002 in all of Europe. The song was such a hit that the singer's label canceled what was planned to be the next single, "Lover", and replaced it with "Get Over You"/"Move This Mountain"[citation needed]. It was also a hit in Australia peaking at number three, staying in the top fifty for twenty weeks, accrediting platinum by ARIA and ending to be the eleventh highest selling single for 2002.
