Giovanni Hidalgo, born March 9, 1963 in San Juan, is a Puerto Rican Latin jazz percussionist. He is widely considered one of the world’s best congo players. He began his music career in 1980 with the Batacumbele Band. While performing with the band in Cuba, he met the Cuban percussionist Changuito, with whom he collaborated to produce their own brand of innovative Latin music. Among the many other musicians that Hidalgo has collaborated with are jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, Paul Simon, Eddie Palmieri, Art Blakely, Zakir Hussain and Jack Bruce.
