On October 22, the band's album Surrender dropped—a collation of tracks reflecting the intimacy of a world they built together while they were separated from their families.
It's an album written entirely on their own terms, and the result is tracks that are bolder, braver and more far-reaching than anything they have done before.
During its creation, the band spent time in the calm, wholesome nature-filled surroundings of Joshua Tree in the US desert. It posed the perfect soundboard for the new album.
"Each album we make is inherently a timestamp," James explains.
"Surrender will always represent this time—we escaped to Joshua Tree where we underwent a lot of change and healing personally. It was hard being away from family during that change"
That unknown, and that strange concurrent sense of loss and healing was what they leaned into when creating the new tracks.
"[When writing music] we try to hit those deep feelings in ourselves. And if that connects to someone else, that's what we want to do—make someone else feel connection."
