The AllMusic Guide adds. . .
If you're reading these words, you'll probably know that Jeff Whalen was the leader of
the band Tsar and therefore was responsible for crafting one of the great unsung albums
of the 2000s. Tsar was a refreshingly light and fun blast of shimmering power pop, packed
with radio hits and glammy melodies that were destined to lodge deep in the brain of
anyone lucky enough to run across them. This is Whalen's first solo album, and while it
doesn't reach the heights of Tsar's debut, it's within shouting distance. 10 More Super
Rock Hits is a throwback to classic power pop, polished like a precious gem by producer
Linus of Hollywood and delivered with gleeful energy by Whalen. He's obviously been
saving up some great songs, and he sounds overjoyed to have a chance to record them. From
the opening "Goofin' Around" through to the album-ending title track, there's a helium-
light feel to the melodies, an openhearted sweetness to Whalen's vocals, and the
arrangements are circa-1981 radio friendly. The guitars have a nice crunch, the vocal
harmonies are lush, and Linus takes care to fill every corner of the mix with bells,
handclaps, and keys just like any power pop producer worth their salt would. Listing all
the songs that sound like perfect world chart-toppers would mean listing the entire
record one by one, so maybe just hitting the toppermost makes sense. The star-crossed
"Jendy!" is the standout, "Kung Fu Criminal" feels like it could have been playing during
a party scene in a teen movie of the early '90s, "The Alien Lanes" is soaring hard rock
that comes closest to living out Whalen's Cheap Trick dreams, and "Don't Give Up" is a
pretty '50s-style ballad with super-sharp backing vocals. Take the songs one by one or
add them up, the result is something special. 10 More Super Rock Hits is a wonderful
follow-up to Tsar, but also a chance to rediscover the brilliance of Whalen's songs and
the joy he brings to his version of power pop.
Ripper's Notes:
Tagged this "rock" simply because of the album title, this is pure bubble-gum pop, with
the exception of "Shanghai Surprise" which is. . . ragtime? yep, ragtime.
Disc 2, "How She Bugalooed It" is Jeff's first, previously unreleased, post Tsar solo
album.
