Info cкрыто спойлером | Раскрыть Album reviewThose perusing the booklet for this 2025 Alpha Classics Mozart release might see the Bösendorfer piano played by Teo Gheorghiu and conclude that the Mozart performances here are modern in their orientation. And they are, but only to a degree. The Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, under conductor Howard Griffiths, plays with little vibrato, and Gheorghiu's Bösendorfer is tamped down to produce an intriguing sharp-edged but quieter sound, making its articulation reminiscent of that of a fortepiano of the period. The Piano Concerto No. 14 in E flat major, K. 449, is certainly recorded often enough, but one can see why the performers wanted to create this recording; it has never sounded quite like this. The relatively restricted forces of this particular concerto make it well-suited to Gheorghiu's approach. In the even more common Violin Concerto in A major, K. 219, there is less of a question of historical or modern approaches, although the lean sound from the orchestra is still present. However, the reading by violinist David Castro-Balbi fits with the whole; his sound is remarkably dry, precise, and bright. The opening Piano Concerto No. 3, K. 40, is not actually by Mozart, although the cadenzas played are his; the piece was an exercise for the young Mozart, based on works by other composers that he adapted to the keyboard concerto format. It functions reasonably well as an overture with Gheorghiu's brisk playing. This well-recorded release is certainly of interest to those concerned with the intriguing question of how to reconcile modern and historical approaches. © James Manheim /TiVo |
