Against all odds Cold in Berlin deliver one of the stand out albums of the year Give Me Walls released on the world 29/11/10. Already lauded as ArtRocker Album of the Month.
This line up has been together less than a year but captured everything that this music - honed over years of live performance - deserves. Fuelled by the DIY ethics of their heroes, they consistently deliver an incendiary energy reminiscent of the early grunge and earlier no-wave, but the noise they make is all their own. Tight driving beats and razor sharp guitars providing a dense and varied back drop for Mys astounding vocal assault.
This London based four piece are excitedly engaging in a winter of incessant gigging, showcasing the album, with an energetic new rhythm section. In the live arena, some bands play, some bands perform. Cold in Berlin break the third wall between band and audience. They literally and viscerally engage with a crowd, a mighty explosion of noise, something fast and powerful and vibrantly alive. And from within, - a whirling, howling female dervish - even if front woman My is inside the crowd, the rest of the band can barely constrain themselves to remain on stage. They attack their instruments as though their lives depended on it. A structured, apocalyptic and precise sonic destruction.
On record Cold in Berlin create delightfully sinister hooks that will bond your blood cells to the dark side then release them straight to your head with gloriously pounding crescendos, like a Bikini Kill / Shellac stand-off.
Their current double A-side single "Destruction" / "What Went Wrong" is the first offering from London based dependent label 2076, released as a limited edition run of 200 numbered vinyl style CD singles, available now, presented in sleeves handmade by the band. It is truly a statement of intent. Whilst infused with DIY ethics, they consistently deliver an incendiary energy reminiscent of the early grunge and earlier no-wave, but the noise they make is all their own.
