"A multi-talented musician, David has long been a respected figure on both the classical and popular music scene."

David was born in Oxford in 1944. After graduating from the London Royal Academy of Music, where he studied composition under Richard Rodney Bennett, he spent several years composing for artists such as Julian Bream, George Malcolm, Janet Baker and The London Symphony Orchestra before becoming a BBC Radio producer. Several prestigious posts followed, including Director of Music at the Laban Movement and Modern Dance Centre in London and eventually a move to the West Country to take charge of student musical activities at Bath University. Bath has remained home to David and his recording studios ever since.

In the early 1980s, while still being actively involved in the local music scene, David also started to pursue an interest in popular music, initially producing successful records at his home studio before opening Bath's first commercial recording facility, Crescent Studios. An international reputation was quickly established in those early days with singles and albums by, among others, The Korgis, Tears for Fears, Echo and the Bunnymen and Icicle Works.

After working on a number of studio projects with Peter Gabriel, David was invited to be Peter's live sound engineer for a successful tour of Europe and North America. (Pink Floyd's PA system, used for the tour, had "never sounded so good" according to one reviewer in the states).

Back in the studio it soon became apparent to artists and record companies alike that an unusual production talent had arrived in provincial Bath, producing a string of classic hits from previously unknown acts and it was not long before major projects were being commissioned by the main record labels, resulting in some of the most exciting album projects of the 1980s. Apart from international best sellers - Peter Gabriel's fourth album (Security), XTC's The Big Express, Jean Michel Jarre's Zoolook and Icehouse's Measure For Measure and Man of Colours albums - many succesful projects were completed with artists as diverse as The Europeans (A & M), Peter Blegvad (Virgin), Barbra Dickson (CBS), How We Live (CBS), Walk The Moon (MCA), the Canadian band M & M and rock legend Peter Hammill (Virgin) who eventually came to share the old Crescent studio premises with David in Bath - then renamed as Terra Incognita. (David relocated a few years ago and his home studio is now known as Inner State.)

While maintaining a successful profile as one of the most sought after producers in the UK David has increasingly re-focussed on his own musical interests. Rather than concentrating on rock and pop productions he has returned to composing and producing music for film, radio and television, as well as still being involved in exciting projects with artists somewhat removed from mainstream commercial music. These include the Japanese musician Yasuaki Shimisu (ex Yellow Magic Orchestra), The Blues Band, further collaborations with Peter Hammill, an album with legendary 70s figure Moondog, major projects with leading New-Age flautist Tim Wheater (for Jerry Moss's Almo label in the USA), with Norwegian soprano Cecilia, a series of Celtic inspired records for Stuart Wilde's Tolemac label and a number of saxophonic solo and ensemble recordings, including a highly acclaimed CD of music by Michael Nyman.

He has also prepared string arrangements for major artists such as The Pretenders (Stand By Me) and Tori Amos (China) as well as collaborating on a substantial number of projects, as musical director and orchestrator, with well-known film and TV composer David Ferguson. These include music for the Robbie Coltrane Cracker series, Robert Hughes American Visions series, films Bravo Two Zero, Hostile Waters, Jeckyll and Hyde, and Disaster At Valdez and TV dramas such as The Icehouse, Woman In White and a number of Ruth Rendell, Catherine Cookson and Inspector Rebus productions.

More recent projects include albums with soprano Chloe Goodchild and flautist Tim Wheater, composing music for two BBC plays, The Diary of a Kidnapping and Conrad's Heart of Darkness, acting as MD for a Remembering Sept 11th event at Covent Garden Opera House, work on the early Goldfrapp albums and a number of mobile recordings including some for the Bath Festival, a Stackridge live DVD and a classical piano CD recital for Somm Records.

With a track record of exciting and innovative successes stretching over the whole of the 80s and 90s, combined with an equally important string of diverse musical projects, David remains a significant figure in many areas of musical activity, and continues to divide his time between carefully selected productions while still developing his own composition and performance talents.

As composer he has been commissioned by major artists and organisations, including singer Janet Baker, harpsichordist George Malcolm, guitarist Julian Bream, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Aldeburgh, Dartington, Cheltenham, Farnham and Bath Music Festivals.

As record producer and engineer he has worked with numerous popular artists such as Peter Gabriel, XTC, Tears For Fears, Icehouse, Echo And The Bunnymen, Jean Michel Jarre, and The Korgis, as well as producing a number of classical music albums.

As arranger and orchestrator he has scored a number of TV and film projects, including (for composer David Ferguson) the Cracker and Inspector Rebus series, as well as preparing string arrangements for, among others, Barbra Dickson, Tori Amos and the Pretenders.

As teacher he has been in charge of music at the University of Bath and The Laban Art of Movement Centre, London, as well as producing schools' music programmes for BBC Radio and lecturing at Bath Spa University.

As performer he has appeared with (among others) Peter Hammill, the Shortwaveband, been principal conductor of the Bath Youth Orchestra, musical director for a number of theatrical productions as well as directing many tracking and scoring sessions for film and TV.

Crescent Recording Studio in Bath grew from being David's home studio into an internationally renowned facility used by many top ranking artists and record labels in the 1980s and 90s. After a few years renamed as Terra Incognita it is now known as Inner State Studio.
