Born in France, as a child this singer of gypsy and Levantine background moved to Barcelona, the city where she currently resides. Her involvement with flamenco began in those early years and at the age of twelve she began singing professionally. Since that time, she has taken part in the most important festivals and recitals of the flamenco circuit, winning various associated awards and distinctions including first prize at the Minas de la Unión festival.

Her musical career unfolded along with her artistic curiosity and she became interested in jazz, forming part of the flamenco fusion group Iberia. With this group, composed of musicians such as Joan Albert and Carles Benavent, she participated in various jazz festivals in France, Germany and Denmark sharing the bill with Chick Corea and John McLaughlin. In 1990 she recorded Manuel de Falla’s ‘El Amor Brujo’ with the Orquesta Teatre Lliure (Harmonía Mundi, 1991). The record became an international hit and she went on to present the work live on stages such as the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Edinburgh Festival, UNESCO headquarters in Paris, the Tanglewood Festival, New York’s Lincoln Center and the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. From 1990 to 1993 she collaborated with the Catalonian theater group La Fura dels Baus on a world tour.

As a result of this collaboration the musical work ‘Noun’ was recorded and went on to receive prizes such as the ‘Crítica Teatral’ and the ‘Ciutat de Barcelona’. In 1993 Ginesa Ortega again collaborated with the Orquesta del Teatre Lliure on the recording ‘Canciones Populares de Federico García Lorca’ for the Harmonía Mundi record label. Four years later, she received the ‘Ciutat de Barcelona’ prize for the second time "for the incorporation of flamenco within current music".

She again worked with La Fura in the presentation of the film ‘Muerte en Granada’ which premiered at Granada’s Palacio de Congresos. At that time she rediscovered her flamenco roots recording ‘Siento’ (Harmonía Mundi, 1997), her first solo record.

The work, which features her own compositions, includes the participation of musicians such as Jorge Pardo, Tino di Geraldo and Carles Benavent. During that time she also participated in festivals devoted to new flamenco voices in Spain and Japan. In 1998 she took part in the festival ‘Actual 98’ and presented her second record ‘Oscuriá’ (Harmonía Mundi, 1998). After signing with the independent record company Picap, she released her third solo album, ‘Por los espejos del agua’ in 2002.

The singer published on December 2005 the album 'Flamenca'.
