Indaba
Информация об исполнителе
Visceral, cutting-edge fusion by an Aussie power trio. Indaba is apparently a Bantu pygmy word for “something serious”, an apt name for this hard-hitting band and their debut disc. Commendable chops and crunch aplenty season a fully enjoyable set of original tunes by a band which is sure to make waves in the future.

Schipke, Wenham and Dean are equal partners in this aural assault; each player is mixed loud for maximum effect as they weave in and out of each other’s parts sinuously. A slow, charming stroll from Wenham’s bass kicks off “Nina” before an intricate unison melody explodes forth. The bassist walks joyfully in time with Dean’s powerful pounding as Schipke grinds in off-time passion. “Joie de Vie” brings the listener to the edge of his seat with phenomenally speedy high notes and Jaco-quality finger-funk from Wenham. Schipke tempers his lightning chop displays with strong, carefully crafted slow figures. Dean isn’t just a pound-monkey himself; he adapts to turnarounds on a dime and strikes letter-perfect accents to egg the others on.

Things quiet down on “Slow Glass” and “I Don’t Know...” as the players create attractive ballad statements. Schipke’s crystalline offerings are especially inviting on the former, and Wenham vibrantly fronts the latter. “I Started Out...”, the oddly named “0.25 Fish” and “Absolute Mobility” stride the line between jazz fusion and raw metal to excellent effect. The closing tune is uplifting, celebrating the joy to be found in musical creation.

While Indaba clearly know the mechanics of fusion as it preceded them, they can hardly be considered derivative. They use the time-tested formulas as basic frameworks to create dazzling, jubilant music that one can return to time and again. Good-time fusion from the land Down Under, impressively done and ready to please.

All About Me.
Thank you for visiting this site. I have been studying the guitar for over thirty years, and have worked as a professional guitarist for twenty years. Styles I have made a living from performing include Rock, Metal, Blues, Country, Funk, Jazz, and Fusion. I am now based in Brisbane, Australia, but I used to live in Sydney, and have performed in all states of Australia, and in the South Pacific (Fiji and Noumea). My fusion band INDABA has an international reputation as an original guitar-based instrumental band. I compose for the band. My academic credentials include an Associate Diploma in Jazz (Qld Conservatorium), and a BA in Sociology. I am also an examiner for the AMEB (Modern Guitar and Bass), and I'm listed on the Whole Note site as a guitar teacher. My web address is www.clydeschipke.cjb.net.
Teaching and Lessons.
Since 2003 I have cut back on the live performance side of guitar playing so that I can specialize in guitar teaching. I have been teaching since 1986, and now teach from my home in West End, Brisbane. I teach all the styles mentioned above, and my students range from total beginners to experienced players (professionals) and other guitar teachers. I enjoy teaching, and find that many students learn not only practical guitar skills, but also from my experiences gained over the years relating to survival as a professional

Scott Dean (Habibe)

I am a professional drummer, percussionist, Music Educator and science worker living in Brisbane, Australia.
Ummm, where to start?
When I read my "Baby book" that my parents prepared for me, it said that at the age of three years old I was humming all the guitar solos to the music they would play on the radio etc.
I guess it started way back then. I have always had an intense passion for music, but gladly I didn't pursue the guitar..haha
My brother and I received our first drumkit in about 1978. With brotherhood comes competitiveness, and we both pushed each other to improve and outplay the other. My brother, Trent Bryson-Dean is an amazing drummer now by any standard.
Anyway, we destroyed our first drumkit pretty quickly, leaving me to play for many an hour on a beanbag we had in our loungeroom, whilst listening to music such as Led Zeppelin or the Police with headphones on.
We finally got another drumkit in about 1983. What a wait that was! I had figured many things out without a drumkit and things came very naturally to me on my new blue Tama Swingstars.
Two years of hard practice and I was in my first Rock N' Roll band. I haven't looked back since!
At first I was totally a rock pig, but my entire idea of the drums changed when I heard the Chick Corea album "Inside Out".
Dave Weckl's playing was something I had never experienced and I was forever destined to be a fusion musician after hearing "Inside Out".
In May 1991 I was lucky enough to see the John Mclaughlan Trio in my hometown of Brisbane, Australia. The passion and technical proficiency that I experienced that night was definitely a spiritual experience.
My life was changed! I knew my place in the universe!
On the 15th of October 2003 I had another life changing event. My girlfriend at the time, Lynette (now my lovely wife) took me to see the musician "Habib Koite" from Mali. If you have not heard his music do yourself a favour and check it out.
His band were just awesome, but the Talking Drum player "Mahamadou Kone" totally blew me away. After a few seconds of hearing this new instrument i was hooked. I needed to find a talking drum and play it.
Well it took me almost a year to find a talking drum and then almost as long to find a teacher but now i am proficient on the talking drum and djembe. My playing has taken a new direction!
Music is my life, my passion, my sanity. I feel I communicate best when I am behind my drumkit, djembe or African talking drum improvising. Talking is almost like a secondary type of communication.
I feel very priviledged indeed!
