Pat Travers

While most bluesy hard rock acts of the 70s and 80s hailed from the United States (the south, to be exact), there were several exceptions to the rule, such as Canadian singer/guitarist Pat Travers. Born in Toronto on April 12, 1954, Travers first picked up the guitar just prior to entering his teens, after witnessing a local performance by the great Jimi Hendrix. It wasnt long before Travers was studying the other top rock guitarists of the day (Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, etc.), and paying his dues by playing in bar bands in the Quebec area.

His first true touring gig came his way when he hooked up with 50s rock n roll vet Ronnie Hawkins (best known for performing with a backing cast that would eventually transform into The Band). But Travers main love was hard rock, so after a year, he packed up his belongings and headed to London. Shortly after touchdown in the U.K., Travers recorded a demo that would land him a recording deal with Polydor and result in the release of his debut, Pat Travers, during the spring of 1976. A performance at Englands annual Reading Festival the same year only peaked interest, which resulted in two more releases in 1977, Makin Magic and Putting It Straight (both of which followed a pre-Iron Maiden Nicko McBrain on drums), before Travers returned to North America and set his sights on the U.S. rock market.

Hooking up with a fine backing band comprised of drummer Tommy Aldridge, guitarist Pat Thrall, and bassist Mars Cowling, the new Travers band lineup premiered on 1979s Heat in the Street. This led to Travers most commercially successful period, resulting in a pair of Top 30 releases, 1979s Live! Go For What You Know (considered by many Travers fans to be his finest hour) and 1980s Crash and Burn. But soon after the dawn of the 80s, bluesy hard rock seemed to quickly fall out of favor amongst the U.S. record buying public, in favor of slickly produced arena rock, and later, MTV-approved bands. As a result, each subsequent Travers release sold less, as his last albums to appear on the U.S. album charts included 1981s Radio Active, 1982s Black Pearl, and 1984s Hot Shot.

Unhappy with Polydor, Travers opted to take a break from releasing albums for the remainder of the decade, but continued to tour. Travers 1990 comeback album, School of Hard Knocks, failed to re-spark interest on the charts, although he continued to issue new studio albums (Blues Tracks, Just a Touch, Blues Magnet, etc.) and archival live sets (King Biscuit Flower Hour, BBC Radio One Live in Concert) throughout the decade.

Travers continues to tour and record regularly (playing alongside the likes of Night Rangers Jeff Watson, Cinderellas Tom Keifer, and Rick Derringer), and in 2001, performed as part of the Voices of Classic Rock tour. Travers emerged from the recording studio once more in 2003, with P.T. Power Trio, a recording that featured covers by the likes of Cream (White Room), Robin Trower (Day of the Eagle), and ZZ Top (Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings), among others. (Greg Prato - AllMusic Guide)

Carmine Appice
The creator of heavy rock drumming as we know it - Drummer magazine -UK

Carmine Appice set the foundation for heavy drummingbefore Bonham,
before Ian Paicebefore anyone else.
Rick Van Horn, Modern Drummer

As drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice set the grooves for the groundbreaking bands 1967 psychedelic debut, inadvertently inventing Stoner Rock in the process. The Fudge had no precedent. The band was totally unique. No rock group, up until that point, had ever so lugubriously s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out well-known pop tunes like the Beatles Eleanor Rigby and Ticket To Ride, Curtis Mayfields People Get Ready, Sonny & Chers Bang Bang Rod Argents Shes Not There and, most famously, The Supremes Motown classic You Keep Me Hangin On to such hippie heights. With Mark Steins mysterioso wash of Grand Guignol keyboard theatrics, Tim Bogerts amazing and trippy bass runs, and guitarist Vince Martells era-happy soloing, Appice boomed like no other drummer in rock history. Their debut album still stands today as a Hard Rock classic. Vanilla Fudge went on to tour with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and even had Led Zeppelin as an opening act.

Post-Fudge, Bogert and Appice formed Cactus (seen as an influence on Kings X and Van Halen). Post-Cactus, the rhythm section found Grammy-winning Guitar Hero Jeff Beck to form the first supergroup: Beck, Bogert & Appice (BBA).

One of the premier showmen in rock, Appice became known worldwide for his astonishing live performances, in addition to becoming a highly sought-after session drummer, recording with countless artists throughout his career. In 76, he joined Rod Stewarts band, touring, recording and writing two of Stewarts biggest hits, Do Ya Think Im Sexy and Young Turks. He left Stewart to record his first solo album, Rockers, and tour Japan and North America with an allstar band. . In the early 80s, he toured with OZZY Osborne ,Ted Nugent . In the mid 80s, he formed King Kobra for two Capitol albums and international touring And in the late 80s, Carmine played on a Pink Floyd record "Momentary Lapse of Reason and formed Blue Murder with Whitesnakes John Sykes and The Firms Tony Franklin. In the early 90s, he pounded away soul-style for The Edgar Winter Group.

As an educator, Carmine was the first to legitimize rock drumming with his landmark book, The Realistic Rock Drum Method, selling over 400,000 copies (now in video format). He was the first Rock Drummer and Rock Musician to conduct instructional clinics and symposiums around the world, a tradition he continues. In appreciation for his universal appeal, Los Angeles was one of four cities that have had Carmine Appice Day. In 91, he was forever immortalized via his induction in cement to the Hollywoods Rock Walk (next to his idols, Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich).
