Savvas Zannas was born in Xanthi, Greece (1952) but as a young man he lived in Thessalonica, where he completed his education in advanced music theory at the city’s State Conservatory.
He continued his musical studies at the Munich Music Academy (1972-1976), taking his degree in tympani and percussion with top marks (Prof. H. Hoelzl class).
His musical activity is multilateral: as a soloist he has performed with the Athens State Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of the Greek Radio and Television and the Kamerata – Orchestra of The Friends of Music, presenting works of Greek composers in Greece and abroad.
Since 1976, he is a member (timpanist) of the National Symphony Orchestra of the Greek Radio and Television. As a professor of percussion he has taught at the National Conservatory of Athens and at the Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata, where he organized the Students’ Orchestra.
Since 1989, he is a member of the Committee of the Greek Composers Union.
He started composing in 1969. Decisive for his career as a composer was his acquaintance and co-operation (1979-1983) with the significant Greek composer Nikos Mamangakis. He has composed symphonic, chamber and solo instrumental works, which have been performed by Greek, European and American orchestras and soloists, in Greece, Russia, Germany, Bulgaria, France and USA.
Among his symphonic works are: Retrogrades (world premiere: Moscow 1987, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor: Alexander Symeonidis), the Piano Concerto (commissioned by The Friends of Music Association for the European Symphonic Music Festival, world premiere: Athens 1996, Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, soloist: Elisabeth Kounalakis, conductor: Vladimir Fedoseev), Kalanda, symphonic work based on Greek carols folk tunes (commissioned by the Athens State Orchestra for the Inauguration of the organ at The Athens Concert Hall, world premiere: Athens1993, Athens State Orchestra, conductor: Alexander Symeonidis), the Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra (world premiere: Athens 1994, National Symphony Orchestra of the Greek Radio and Television, soloist: Dimitris Marinakis, conductor: Alkis Baltas). Two more symphonic works have been performed in world premiere by the Patra’s Soloists String Orchestra in 1995 and 1996.
In 1990 he composed music, commissioned by The Athens Concert Hall, for D. W. Griffith’s silent film Broken Blossoms (1919).
Savvas Zannas’ production is also notable in chamber music, including about 40 works (8 string quartets, trios, quintets, septets, nonets, works for solo piano, violin, guitar, flute etc). His 5th Quartet for Strings was awarded a prize at the Yannis. A. Papaioannou Competition.
Other works: Rhapsody for Clarinet and String Orchestra, Concerto for Violin and String Orchestra, Suite for 2 and 3 Guitars and String Orchestra, Concerto for Orchestra.
In 1984 his book Rhythm–Metre–Tempo was published.
His works are published by the Papagrigoriou-Nakas Editions.
