Sebastián de Covarrubias (1539–1613) was a Spanish lexicographer, cryptographer, chaplain and writer. He wrote the Tesoro de la lengua castellana o española.

Sebastian's father and his brother John Horozco , Horozco Sebastian (1510-1579), was new and christian son judeoconversa Maria Soto. The mother, Maria Covarrubias Valero de Leyva, however, was of better lineage, according to the standards of the time, and was born into a family of old Christian highly regarded theologians, architects and craftsmen. His grandfather on his mother was the embroiderer Marcos Covarrubias, brother of the great architect Alonso de Covarrubias . Another brother was John de Covarrubias, a canon in the cathedral of Salamanca , who helped Sebastian in their studies and to be prebendary canon (entitled to income) in the same cathedral. Two children were Don Alonso Diego (1512-1577) and Antonio (1524-1602), great theologians, jurists and men of much political weight and importance who attended the Council of Trent as representatives of Spain.

He who would be famous lexicographer , studied at Salamanca ( 1565 - 1573 ), where he lived with his grandfather's uncle above the canon Juan de Covarrubias in the Church of Salamanca. At the appropriate time don Juan gave up this position "in favor of his nephew," because it had become a priest. He was then chaplain to Philip II , consultant Holy Office and canon of the Cathedral of Cuenca , the latter position he held for over thirty years. In 1595 he was appointed Apostolic Commissioner endowment rectories for Moors .

In 1610 Sebastian seriously ill but recovered and printed a classic from the iconic literature, moral Badges ( 1610 ). He wrote, moreover, a Treaty of figures and a translation of the Satires and Epistles of Horace that are not conserved, but is known primarily for monumental dictionary , the Treasury of the Castilian or Spanish language ( 1611 ), the best work lexicographical published between dictionary Spanish-Latin of Antonio de Nebrija (1492) and the Dictionary of Officers of the Royal Spanish Academy (1726-1739). Your inquiry is still useful to establish the meaning of the classical literature of Golden Age Spanish.

Although part etymological dictionary of this has been largely overcome, the Treasury Covarrubias is the work of a humanist and not content with giving brief and dry references to the meanings of a word, but with grace and erudition lectures on them and brings Sayings , idioms, literary anecdotes and quotes that contain the term. The same author wrote a Supplement to the Treasury did not print but has been edited modern. In 1673 Father Benito Remigio Noydens Treasury reprinted with additions of his own.
