The biography of 'Shoes and Socks Off', entitled: all these chords sound the same. Tobias Hayes, son, brother, uncle, dude and boo-hoo merchant, has been playing stubbed-toe blues under the name 'Shoes and Socks Off' since 2007. It started off as a joke.
After singing in a tricky rock band called meet me in st. Louis and playing bass for a 'Flat-out motown' band called shield your eyes, december 2008 saw the release of 'from the muddy banks of melitzer', toby's first solo album. Recorded in a bedroom, with two mic's, in one day, it was released via diy indie label big scary monsters.
'Melitzer' was followed in summer 2009 by 'Hand-reared suburban piglet', featuring the same ten songs as its predecessor, this time with the help of a loyal gang of ragged fiends contributing drums, strings, programming, pianos, singing and various other noises to make a very different sounding record.
Come winter, the third full length was released, 'to where the skyline is fortified with windows and doors'. Ten new songs, some of which featured members of nitkwoski, palehorse and blakfish. Like the first two records, this was released on made-to-order cd, packaged in a black and white, hand-made cardboard sleeve, sold only via the big scary monsters webstore and at gigs.
In july 2010, 'robin hood waiter champion have-not' will be released, the fourth shoes and socks off record. Tobias reckons it's better than the other three. The album is preceeded by 'piepton', a 6 track free download covers ep (including songs by eels, pixies, smashing pumpkins, and other artists whose songs shouldn't be covered) as well as the first shoes and socks off full band tour in july. Later on in the year it will be followed by 'dot dot dot - and other works', a lyric book with download links for a heap of songs.
Tobias tries to grow 2 beards a year, and enjoys listening to ten grand, autolux, des ark, the robot vs., nirvana, p j harvey, free and has a soft spot for run d.m.c. he likes to think he goes about things in a fairly punk kinda way, but isn't sure if he is pulling it off. He certainly does not like bed-wetting singer-song-writers, facebook, new clothes, or writing his own biography.
