Sithonia was always much more symponic and ELP inspired by most other Rock Progressivo Italiano bands. On Spettacolo annullato, they moves past ELP and more into an almost avant-garde/RIO landscape. The material is very complex and a massive departure from their more melody orientated debut album. Spettacolo annullato is almost baroque RIO in it's build up with some atonal music with a symphonic complexity. Some of this album sounds like Univers Zero. This atonal material is also twinned with some very melodic melodies too. There is plenty of Rock Progressivo Italiano stuff here too.
The vocals and the instrumentation is very good throughout. I did not expect what comes out of my speakers at all, I have to admit. A shock was delivered and received. But I like this album better and better for each time. It is sorely missing some great melodies though. It feels like some parts of this album is complexity for the sake of complexity and to shed of the skin the band was carrying on their debut album. But this album is still a good album though.
"In the winter of 1985/86 I asked some old friends, who for many years cooperated with me in various musical experiences, to meet a few evenings to arrange and play any song that I had composed. I then played acoustic guitar and sang with me and there were also Orio Cenacchi on drums, Andrea Guglielmi Passarini Paul on bass and guitar.
We rehearsed in the basement of a friend of mine (Andrea Ferrari) on Union Square in Bologna. I remember that for a few weeks he joined the group yet unnamed such a David to the saxophone. In the spring of 1986 I went to synthesizers and we joined the singer Antonella choirs and solo guitarist Pier Luca Gamberini of Scarfea (now with Zabov )
The repertoire of this period little remains. They were short compositions set to the style of song writing with some brief ideas and timid opening instrumental soloists. In the summer of 1986, the group performed in a few concerts (as yet unnamed) and a few weeks after I left for a vacation in Greece with Paul Passarini and Antonella (specifically in Halkidiki , Sithonia peninsula), I decided to give the group name this fascinating peninsula suspended between the earth and the noisy and silent mystic Cassandra and the Mount Athos. In the autumn of the same year I decided to make a change more precise the music of infants Sithonia greater impact electric and attempt to broaden the instrumental parts according to the progressive style that was always my first love of music. To do this I had to give the contribution of Paolo and Antonella Passarini Cori and call another old friend Gabriele English, flautist, pianist, guitarist, and much more. They begin to take shape several songs that will place a few years later in the first disc of Sithonia and other never recorded. Unfortunately, Gabriel lives in Tuscany and can hardly meet the commitments and evidence of the group and after the summer of 1987 another event threatens the future of Sithonia: guitarist Pier Luca Gamberini Scarfea of leaves, and so I found myself with Orio and Andrew almost to the point of departure. But the story had yet to begin. Through an ad placed in a shop of musical instruments (guitar genre Wanted "old progressive" ...) shows a young guitarist, composer and multi-instrumentalist: Roberto Magni immediately included in the band. For vocals, I decided to avail myself of the exclusive supply of a solo singer, reserving to myself the role of the second item. The singer is found in the family: it is Marcheselli Paul, my brother, singer, comedian, entertainer father's footsteps (his father was a famous accordion player from Bologna). The evidence of this new training starting in autumn 1987. In December, the first concert (the seat of District San Vitale in Bologna), in which he participated behind the scenes (via midi sounds on my keyboard), another old friend, already with me, Orio and Andrea in the 70s: the keyboardist Oriano Dasasso .
The Sithonia are then in training that will affect between 1988 and 1989, the first album, the self-produced "On the trail of stone." The turning point and the growth of what will become our own little style stems from this time forward the integration of my compositions and the work of Roberto Magni in particular that takes care of all the arrangements and builds valuable demo tape recorded domestically that are then used in all the other components to verify and assist the creation of each song.
With "flight tests" demo that already includes much of the future vinyl, and even more so with the demo of "On the trail of stone" the Sithonia begin to look around and in this tour d'horizon is important to the casual acquaintance with Sandro Pallavicini (now writer of success) that collaborates with several magazines (" Metal Shock "" Rockerilla ") and encourages them to continue strongly, spurring the creation of a self-produced disc as other bands of the reborn Italian prog (New Era, Arcansiel , Ezra Winston ) had already done so.
The meeting with Sandro takes place at a festival that is held each year near Vigevano and during which the present Sithonia convince themselves of the opportunity to hear new area of interest in their songs.
After a few contacts that are not defined by the Florentine label "Contempo" (which will still be the main distributor of "Along the path of stone") decide for the self and with the help of some friends (who, we should remember: Alberto Dal Well said "Otelma," Roberto "Cameroon" Rimondi, Brian David Srb and Flavio Tugnoli) realize the debut album "Along the path of stone" that the next year will be brought to Sandro Pallavicini always during the festival prog Lombard.
They begin the first reviews both in Italy and abroad and are really satisfactory so that the puck enters the charts of the best albums of 1989 compiled by the magazine Rockerilla .
While Sithonia begin to try new songs bassist Andrea Guglielmi due to work commitments he is forced to leave and is replaced by Valerio Roda, who was a member of the "Sinai" group of origin Roberto Magni.
In the period following the exit of the disc record a song ("Mirror") for a compilation curated by the Toast of Turin and decide to abandon the self-seeking label capable of producing our own music as they are not able to problems time and personal commitments to cope with the daily work that involves the management of self-production.
In this period the singer Paul Marcheselli decided to leave the band and was replaced by Marco Giovannini, who was also former member of several groups in the Bologna area.
Through a Florentine friend (Alfredo DiCaprio) makes the acquaintance of the band Mauro Moroni's Mellow Records to which it is proposed the new album already recorded with the help of David Srb. It's "Entertainment canceled" coming out on CD in the fall of 1992. This is definitely the greatest period of creativity and expansion of the band. "Entertainment canceled" collects a number of very positive reviews, especially abroad, and establishes itself as the most successful record of Sithonia. The following year, a song of the same disc will also appear on the compilation "Progressive voyage" always label San Remo. Released in 1994 instead of the live album "Crowd of passage" for much of the logged in Genoa in an event organized by Mellow with the participation of Caravan Richard Sinclair.
In the spring and summer of 1995, Sithonia affect the second studio album by Mellow Records label (the fourth in their history) that is titled "Border" and exits at the end of the year. In the early months of 1996 is closed (but not always as we shall see ...) the relationship with the Mellow Records.
The realization of "Border" was particularly demanding and tiring. Consider that all the components of Sithonia have always been amateurs of music, driven by a passion and are ready to sacrifice for the different realization of their projects, but the long nights spent in the study of Gianluca Gadda which followed the normal days were working really hard. Think of a famous band, with strong economic motivations, that can smash even stronger relationships, so it is not that difficult to understand why in this group, always ready to sacrifice a lot and pick up a little, they began a series of ill-feeling, various misunderstandings and jitters. In the years following the creation of "Border" occasions concerts are becoming increasingly rare, the enthusiasm for the "return of the Italian prog" fades, the reviews of "border" are not as favorable as in the past. The potential songs for a new album is ready, but it is not clear who will produce it, there is a feeling of futility of it all: the disk, tests, another disk and then ... what changes? The result of this climate is the alternation of guitarist Roberto Magni (who had contributed so much to the sound, the compositions and arrangements) with Sauro Musi. And it is in this formation that will carry Sithonia in 1999 "Hotel Brun," which was unsuccessfully offered to other labels and eventually will be made .... the good old Mellow Records. Does the disc satisfy much all of us and the crisis may seem outdated. But, as often happens in these situations, the story is the epilogue: a summer evening in 1999, I convened at my house and I announced to want to close with this experience. Maybe not everyone agreed, and maybe my choice was instinctive too, but that was it, after almost 15 years of music history this small lock on the sly, as it had begun "
Like many of the stories of music ... you go and you go back .... so, it took a bit 'of years, during which, however, we continued seeing each other and cooperate in individual projects in the spring of 2008, we met in a restaurant on the outskirts of Bologna, ate and drank well, and a few weeks later (in the formation of "Entertainment canceled" and "Border") we were back in the rehearsal room ... and the power of crescentina tigella!
And so it came out in 2011 "The simple solution" for the label Lizard Records Loris Furlan who has supported us and encouraged us to lose out in the judgment of the listeners. We were very happy with this work and comments, mostly positive, that have accompanied its release. Especially because we were able to convey the message of a reunion of vintage men gentlemen only .. inspired by their past .. but something strongly desired and also suffered, often come out with anger, as far away as possible from the habit and manners .
