New Grove Project originated with Ingemar Hjertqvist and Per Sundbom. Ingemar says that his primary goal is to highlight "progressivity." Besides this term, Ingemar describes the project's music only vaguely:
"So what about the music? It would not be fair to even try to give any description besides 'progressivity.' One common theme in the compositions and arrangements is the focus of melody (or in some cases melodies considering the complex structure of the songs) without any deviating solos from the musical scenery of each composition."
Only 300 copies of their first demo, which was recorded in Nylunda, Sweden (which translates to English as New Grove) in 1994 were distributed. From there, Ingemar went on to gather an impressive array of musicians to participate in the project.
The album Fool's Journey was recorded in 1996 with the following lineup:
Ingemar Hjertqvist on vocals, Pär Lindh (Pär Lindh Project) on keyboards, André Schornoz (Swiss Ländler Gamblers) on bass, Jode Leigh (ex-England) on drums, and Roine Stolt (Kaipa, The Flower Kings, Transatlantic, Karmakanic, The Tangent on guitar.
In 2002, Ingemar had accumulated enough material (and, as he says, progressivity) for another album. The album Brill was recorded with the following lineup: Ingemar Hjertqvist, André Schornoz on bass, Pär Lindh on keyboards, Hasse Bruniusson (Samla Mammas Manna, The Flower Kings, Flying Food Circus) on drums and percussion, Fredy Schnyder on guitar, and John 'Bobo' Bollenberg on vocals. Most of the lyrics were written by Mikael Syväjärvi.
