Debut full-length from this spiky new-wave Brooklyn duo. On the heels of their critically acclaimed EP, This Desert, Brooklyn's The Hundred in the Hands will release their debut full-length September 21 on Warp Records. Time Out New York says "The Hundred in the Handsâ TM music springs from that sliver of the early '80s in which pop was personal, arty and potentially angry," while Brooklyn Vegan calls their EP "a bit post-punky, a bit shoegaze-y but sounds like now. And you can dance to it." The new recording follows the bandâ TMs first national tour and a wave of critical praise from the U.K. and Europe. The Hundred in the Hands is an album of deceptively complex pop songs which hark back to the dance music of NYC's storied underground. Where their recent EP feels like a summertime pop dream, THITH's album conjures the spirit of downtown's mutant disco scene as made legendary by clubs like the Paradise Garage.
The Hundred in The Hands - The Hundred in the Hands (Warp Records) - released 20th September
Really, I’m down with all the washy Balearic chillwave stuff that seems to be coming out of the States right now. But sometimes, you just want a beat. NYC’s The Hundred in the Hands self-titled debut is a luscious combination of intimate narrative vocals, huggable guitar riffs, knee-jerk disco beats and analogue synths. Leading in with Moroder-style arpeggiators, opening track ‘You Aren’t Young’ declares the album’s post-disco sensibility. Single ‘Pigeons’ is a pop gem, with chasms of synthesiser and driving bass. But it is the contrast of indie guitar riffs over four-four dance rhythms and synth fills on ‘Commotion’ that make it a candidate for the album’s best track. THITH are refreshing, sounding like little else right now. Dress it up as you will, this is pure pop.
