Из всех джазовых инструментов контрабас - далеко не самый яркий. Хотя и самый большой. Контрабасисты редко становятся знаменитыми. Раньше к контрабасу даже микрофон не ставили - все равно публика на него внимания не обращает. Главное, чтобы артистам было слышно - поскольку контрабас отвечает за свинг, закладывает фундамент на самом дне звукового диапазона. Партия этого инструмента довольно однообразна, в классическом джазе он отмечает каждую четверть: бум-бум-бум-бум. И так, в среднем, по шестьсот раз в каждой пьесе. Десять тысяч раз за концерт - и хорошо еще, если в конце второго отделения дадут сыграть небольшое соло. Неудивительно, что исполнителей на контрабасе, добившихся известности, можно по пальцам пересчитать. Загибая указательный, средний или безымянный, обязательно придется назвать имя Ray Brown. В течение пятидесяти лет, проведенных на джазовой сцене, этот музыкант аккомпанировал самым изысканным мастерам импровизации. Многих его партнеров уже нет на свете. Может быть, поэтому, спохватившись, Ray Brown решил собрать всех друзей - и старых, и новых - и создал ради этой цели проект "Some of My Best Friends Are...". С железной регулярностью, каждые два года, он записывал диски с “некоторыми из своих друзей”. Сначала вышли диски, на которых Браун играет с лучшими саксофонистами, пианистами, певцами и гитаристами, но настоящей сенсацией стал последний альбом серии, посвященный мастерам трубы.
