Give 'em The Axe:
Lizzy Borden's bid to become the '80s L.A. scene's glam metal response to Alice
Cooper begins with this four-song EP, which, like that of rising contemporaries
Ratt, would ironically remain a fan favorite thanks to its raw sound and street-
hungry bravado. And with good reason, for it contained three surprisingly mature and
well-conceived band originals -- not to mention an unexpected cover of Rainbow's
"Long Live Rock'n'Roll" -- that displayed a greater appreciation for British heavy
metal (mostly Judas Priest and Iron Maiden) than was typical of Lizzy Borden's
fellow Hollywood glamsters. Both the title track and "Kiss of Death" delivered
choruses as memorable as the eponymous frontman's horror flick schtick was
captivating to younger listeners, unaware of Cooper; and the wildcard "No Time to
Lose" even flirted with thrash with relative authority. All in all, these songs'
made for an entertaining and promising debut for Lizzy Borden and crew.
Terror Rising:
Following up the misguided Visual Lies album and recorded as the original lineup of
Lizzy Borden was breaking up, Terror Rising is a four-song EP pairing two covers
(Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" and the Tubes' snot-rock classic "Don't Touch
Me There") with two originals that sound like album leftovers. The version of "White
Rabbit" is just as much of a bad idea as it sounds like it would be, an irritating
reworking of a song for which the band seemingly had no particular affinity. On the
other hand, the Tubes cover is a whole lot of fun, a duet with Bitch singer Betsy
Weiss and one from which campy vocalists milk every ounce of goofy humor. The two
originals on side two, "Catch Your Death" and the title track, are slight riff-
rockers with little to recommend them.
Ripper's Notes
Two on one EPs reissue, minus the previously released tracks from the original Terror Rising EP (and, sadly, the remix of 'Give 'em The Axe'). Does not appear to have been remastered, just a straight re-issue. The "Give 'em The Axe" ep is great, "Terror Rising" not so much, though 'Catch Your Death' is a welcome addition to the Lizzy Borden catalog. The title track, 'Terror Rising' is more of a skit than a song.
