When Kim Wilde revisits her past, it’s not just a nostalgia trip—it’s a full-fledged revival. Presented as a sequel to her 1988 album Close, this latest release Closer extends the hedonistic new wave and disco vibes of the original. Following in the footsteps of Cher and Madonna, it’s now Kim Wilde’s turn to assume eternal youth. Indeed, Frozen-era Madonna comes to mind in the ethereal track "Lighthouse." With remarkable precision, the singer of "You Keep Me Hangin’ On" recreates the sound that made her famous 37 years ago. Perhaps the most striking example of this ‘photocopy effect’ is found on "Trail of Destruction"—its melody, gimmicks, and Kim Wilde’s voice especially, feel as though they’ve been lifted straight out of her golden era. This commemorative album also features Midge Ure’s voice woven into lush lyrical strings on "Sorrow Replaced", while “Savasana” nods to the meditative ‘corpse pose’ familiar to yoga enthusiasts. Though the 1980s may be long gone, Closer is a declaration that the spirit of the ‘80s lives on! A family affair (her niece Scarlett features on "Hourglass Human"), Closer is a whirlwind of catchy melodies and rever-drenched vocals—sometimes to the point of excess. The result? A high-energy tribute to her past that teeters between exhilarating homage and self-parody.
