Miley Cyrus’s ninth album opens in an ultra-cinematic atmosphere: “Prelude” starts with minimalist arpeggios reminiscent of Richard Robbins, only to culminate in a flamboyant parody of a James Bond theme. In the music video (and on the album cover), the 30-something artist wears a dazzling gown by Thierry Mugler. The two interludes through the album continue to reinforce a sense of a soundtrack to some imagined story. The singer elaborates on this concept: “The visual component of this is driving sound… The songs, whether they’re about destruction or heartbreak or death, they’re presented in a way that is beautiful, because the nastiest times of our lives do have a point of beauty.” Miley even goes beyond the visual references to transcend time: the track “Something Beautiful” immerses us in the soul of the 1970s, while “Walk of Fame” makes nods to 1980s pop, specifically Bronski Beat. Over in the ballad world, Miley contributes two gems: “More To Lose” showcases her unmistakable vocal tone, and “Give Me Love” closes the album with a heartfelt declaration to drummer Maxx Morando, her current boyfriend.
