The AllMusic Guide (surprisingly) adds. . .
On their self-titled full-length debut -- a release that also served as
the band's swan song -- San Francisco quartet Amateur Night bashes out
jangling, instantly familiar power pop in the vein of Minneapolis bands
of yore. Produced by local knob-twister Todd Herfindal (Thrill Pillows,
Blue Sky Roadster, Single), the smartly paced album opens with the
catchier-than-syphilis "Miss Enigma," in which singer/guitarist Greg
Heller delivers the telltale slice-of-urban-life line, "Let's keep on
rockin'/Circle the block and my whole damn life is lookin' for
parking." Heller relinquishes lead vocal duty to fellow guitarist (and
childhood buddy, as evinced by the disc's tray-card photo of the pair
dolled up in ballet tutus as young boys) Tim McGoey on several numbers,
including the vindictive rocker "Cat Hair on My Coat" and "Ambulance
Chaser," which winds down the disc with its slowly faded, repeating
"na-na-na-na" chorus. Westerberg-ian turns of lyrical phrasing turn up
everywhere, most surprisingly on Heller's vulnerable acoustic lament
"Lightning" and the popped-up honky tonk of "Press Release." Meanwhile,
J Mascis is reportedly still awaiting his royalty kickdown for "What's
Ahead," whose intro riff, bassline, and arrangement reveal themselves
as a slower-burning dead ringer for Dinosaur Jr.'s "Nothin's Goin' On."
No matter, though, as Amateur Night -- released in early 1999 on the
band's own Jim's Records imprint -- has the appealingly familiar feel
of the 15-year-old t-shirts Heller alludes to on "Lightning." There's a
good chance every city in America has an Amateur Night prowling its
stages and studios, but the sharp humor and unaffected honesty etched
within this album's fabric help set it apart from that new EP from
Everyband U.S.A.
Ripper's Notes:
Those who read these notes regularly (someone must, right?) may
remember I mentioned a wicked crush on drummer Sharon Lord. This band
is how I knew her.
In the late 90s early 00s, would go to "the city" (San Francisco) twice
a week to see bands play. Some were (smaller) national touring band,
but usually it was local NorCal bands. This is one of those bands.
Went to enough shows that I actually became friends with Greg, and hung
out a bit outside of shows. Even bought a guitar from him, that I
never learned how to play. This CD is prime memories. I hope you enjoy
it!
