Album Review: Amy Winehouse - Back To Black (20th Anniversary Edition)

A twenty-year anniversary is a milestone worth commemorating in style. Amy Winehouse's Back to Black—her second and final studio album—was met with universal acclaim, topped charts worldwide, and earned the British singer five Grammy Awards in 2008. This expanded three-disc edition beautifully celebrates that monumental legacy. Naturally, the first disc is dedicated entirely to the original album, while the second unearths a trove of rare versions and remixes. Her spirited covers of The Specials' "You're Wondering Now" and Toots & The Maytals' "Monkey Man" hint at the Jamaican ska direction she was exploring toward the end of her career. Also included are Ghostface Killah's remix of "You Know I'm No Good"—previously featured on the American rapper's album More Fish—and the excellent "Do Me Good," notably drawn from the 12x7: The Singles Collection box set.

However, the biggest revelation here lies in four previously unreleased demos. "I'm No Good (You Know I'm No Good)," "Fuckery (Me & Mr Jones)," "I've Been Drinking (Just Friends)," and "Tears Dry (Alternative Demo)" appear in their rawest forms, revealing the initial creative sparks behind these now-iconic tracks. The third instalment captures the entirety of her live set at Amsterdam's Paradiso on 8 February 2007. Delivered with remarkable restraint and vocal mastery, it stands as one of her finest live recordings, capturing an Amy Winehouse who appears at peace, joyful, and full of brilliant promise.
