Brahms almost completely rewrote his Trio Op. 8 35 years after its first performance – yet the rarely performed original version (recorded here) is a splendid example of the impetuous, fantastical universe of the young composer. Similarly, his intense self-criticism meant it took him 19 years to produce the definitive version of his Piano Quartet Op.60, perhaps the freest and most intimate of his three works for these forces.
The Trio Wanderer's Complete Piano Trios of Brahms [HMC901915/16 nla] was a Daily Telegraph CD of the Week: “A superb Brahms recital”, said Richard Wigmore, and Stephen Johnson in BBC Music Magazine opined: “This is some of the most elegant playing I have heard in Brahms’s chamber music…superb playing.”
